Imagine an Palantir orb or scrying pool like from Lord of the Rings.
Seems to usually refer to computer access to intelligence usually for the purpose of showing the target a reflection of themselves, usually in a negative light.
“Galadriel: Will you look into the mirror? Frodo: What will I see? Galadriel: Even the wisest cannot tell. For the mirror shows many things. Things that were, things that are, and some things... that have not yet come to pass.”
There’s a knock-off version of this in Harry Potter I think too.
